Darlington Crematorium stands within West Cemetery on Carmel Road North. Darlington Borough Council manages the crematorium, providing funeral services, memorial options and support with cremation arrangements.

Use DL3 8RY for navigation. Once inside the cemetery, follow signs to the funeral chapel.
Finding the Correct Building
The funeral chapel opened in April 2023. It stands towards the far end of the cemetery, separately from the office and Book of Remembrance building.
Therefore, if you are attending a funeral, head to the chapel rather than the cemetery office. Allow time to find the building and park before the service begins.
Parking and Accessibility
The chapel car park provides 65 spaces, including seven accessible bays. The chapel, waiting room and toilets offer accessible facilities. In addition, a hearing loop supports visitors who use compatible hearing aids.
If someone in your party needs assistance, contact the office before travelling.
Funeral Services at Darlington Crematorium
The chapel seats more than 140 mourners. Families can arrange music and screen tributes through their funeral director.
At the end of the ceremony, they can choose curtains, voile or an open view of the coffin. Afterwards, mourners can view floral tributes outside.
Service Times and Duration
The council lists cremation hours as Monday to Friday, 9am–3pm, with hourly bookings.
However, an hourly booking does not mean an hour-long ceremony. The council recommends 20–25 minutes for the service; its standard fee includes 20 minutes of chapel use. Confirm the precise arrangements with your funeral director, especially if you need extra time.
Arranging a Funeral
Your funeral director can coordinate the booking, paperwork and optional tributes. Alternatively, if you intend to arrange the funeral yourself, contact the crematorium office for guidance.
Before finalising the ceremony, agree its length and any additional services. This helps everyone involved plan the readings, music and arrival arrangements.
Cremation Fees and Optional Services
Darlington Borough Council’s published charges from 1 April 2026 include:
- Standard adult cremation: £1,200.
- Direct-to-crematorium adult cremation: £600, with the coffin received before 10am.
- Additional chapel time: £300 for 20 minutes.
- Live, on-demand and downloadable webcast: £65.
- Scattering ashes at a reserved time: £50.
The standard cremation charge includes the cremation certificate, chapel use, music engine and scattering ashes in the Gardens of Remembrance at an unreserved time.
These are crematorium charges rather than the total cost of a funeral. Consequently, ask your funeral director for an itemised quotation that includes their services and any optional extras.

Webcasting and Visual Tributes
Webcasting allows people who cannot attend to follow the service remotely. Meanwhile, optional photo slideshows and musical tributes can add a personal element to the ceremony.
Arrange these services in advance. Also, ask the funeral director to explain how guests will receive viewing details and access any recording.
Gardens of Remembrance and Ashes
Darlington Crematorium has two Gardens of Remembrance. Families can discuss scattering ashes, attending an arranged scattering or collecting ashes with the office.
However, the gardens do not offer ashes burial / Interment. If you prefer burial, ask about a suitable grave in one of Darlington’s cemeteries before making your decision.
Darlington Crematorium Memorials and Book of Remembrance
Memorial Wall and Planter Plaques
Memorial wall and planter plaques provide alternatives to a Book of Remembrance entry. The council offers different inscription options, while its published fee schedule lists memorial terms of seven, 14 and 21 years.
Before applying, discuss the location, wording and ongoing arrangements with the office. This will help you choose a memorial that suits your family’s wishes.
Book of Remembrance
The Book of Remembrance accepts inscriptions of two to eight lines. Some entries can also include illustrations.
The remembrance room opens daily, 9am–5pm. Families can view the physical entry on its anniversary date or enquire about viewing it at another time.
In addition, an online version and a touchscreen in the remembrance room allow visitors to search entries without waiting for the anniversary.
For the online Book of Remembrance, access the website here:
The council asks for completed applications at least six months before the intended anniversary display date. Therefore, allow sufficient time if you want an entry ready for a particular date.

How long does a funeral service last?
